Suburban Fitness is a gym that strives to break down barriers, making fitness accessible and enjoyable for everyone. We've created an environment and community where clients feel comfortable training in their own skin while pursuing their goals.
Our team of trainers offer tailored classes for all fitness levels – from beginners to advanced – including high intensity interval training, strength-building, and cardio exercises that can be modified to make it suitable for your level.
Not only do we provide you with top quality service at our Upper Hutt facility but also at fair reasonable prices! At Suburban Fitness we are committed to helping individuals reach their full potential through accessible physical activity and creating meaningful connections within the community.
Unlike other fitness class-driven gyms in Upper Hutt, we won’t charge you an arm and a leg, our prices remain fair and reasonable so you can get the most out of your gym membership.
We also have no contracts so you can put your membership on hold or cancel at any time without having to pay cancellation fees. Please note that we do however have a 1-month notice period to cancel.
The Team
DANIEL - Group Fitness Coach
Originally from the small village of Alltwen in South Wales, Daniel Trick brings both life experience and unshakable drive to his coaching role at Suburban Fitness. After moving to New Zealand in 2014 to continue his 17-year career in the prison service, Daniel also began a personal journey that would change his life — both physically and mentally.
When he landed in Auckland, Daniel weighed 130kg. A simple moment — struggling to tie his shoelaces after the long-haul flight — became the turning point that sparked his commitment to change. His journey through fluctuating weight and countless training styles eventually led him to high-intensity, circuit-style workouts. It was a game-changer. He found not just results, but a passion for fitness that now fuels his desire to help others achieve their own health and wellbeing goals.
At Suburban, Daniel is known for his motivating energy, no-nonsense coaching style, and love of pushing members just outside their comfort zones. His sessions are tough but supportive — and judging by the banter he gets from members, the tougher the class, the better the feedback!
Now a proud dad to his young son Carwyn, Daniel brings a grounded, people-first approach to fitness. He thrives on building community, encouraging progress, and helping others discover just how strong they really are.
The Team
PENNY - Pilates Instructor
Penny is our amazing Pilates instructor, and her journey with Suburban Fitness began just like many of our members — as a keen group fitness regular who loved the buzz of a great workout. Over time, she found herself increasingly drawn to Pilates, often swapping out her usual moves for Pilates-based exercises. That growing passion led her to upskill and become a certified Mat Pilates instructor, and she has since gone on to complete further training in Reformer Pilates through the esteemed Tiaki Pilates Institute in Wellington.
Penny now leads classes in our brand-new Reformer Pilates studio — a purpose-built space designed to support all levels, from beginners to more advanced movers. Her sessions combine the classical principles of Pilates with contemporary modifications, helping members build strength, control, and confidence in a supportive and energising environment.
She brings the same member-first mindset — a core value shared by all our trainers — into every class she teaches. With a background in education and a deep love for movement, Penny is passionate about helping people feel confident, capable, and strong in their own bodies. Her teaching style is adaptable and empowering, ensuring every session is enjoyable, inclusive, and tailored to the individual.
